2012 Arthritis Australia National Research Program

Some specifically funded projects outlined below. More projects will be added upon confirmation.


Fellowships

The AFA-ARA Heald Fellowship - $50,000

The AFA-ARA Heald Fellowship is available for research programs both overseas and in Australia. Please note that this is for one year only and there will be no renewals, except in rare circumstances e.g. part-time research. (preference for research overseas but Australian-based research will be considered)

The Victorian ARA Fellowship - $50,000

Designed to support expansive self-development of trainee/rheumatologists within Victoria. The purpose of the award is to encourage rheumatologists to develop expertise in a clinical or research discipline in rheumatology and to use that expertise in and for the betterment of rheumatology in Victoria.


The Ken Muirden Overseas Training Fellowship - $100,000

This grant is designed to give a rheumatologist who is about to or has completed advanced training in Rheumatology within the last two years an opportunity to undertake further clinical or research training overseas in an approved institution in any country. This fellowship is jointly funded by the Australian Rheumatology Association and Roche Products Pty Ltd.

Project Grants & Grants in Aid

Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. In some cases these grants address particular questions and may complement larger established programs of research. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants (defined as within 6 years of receiving their PhD). A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on specific arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.


Arthritis Australia and State & Territory Affiliate Grants  - $25,000 (funded by Arthritis Queensland)

Arthritis Australia and State & Territory Affiliate Grants  - $80,000 (funded by Arthritis South Australia)


ARA Project Grant - $75,000

Two project grants ($50,000 & $25,000). These grants are available to members of the ARA who wish to come into research and aims to facilitate entry back into research. The track record of applicant is not a pre-requisite but the applicant will have to have an innovative, feasible and well designed research project undertaken in collaboration with an established research unit.


Barbara Cameron Memorial Grant - $20,000


Clitheroe Foundation Grant - $20,000

(to foster research into the understanding of and/or improved therapy for HLA B27 disease including ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, IBD arthritis and SAPPHO. Preference for young/emerging investigator)


SA LSS Support Group Grant - $20,000 (funded by Arthritis South Australia)

(1st preference for research into lupus, scleroderma or Sjogrens; 2nd preference systemic inflammaroy disease)


Zimmer Australia Grant - $50,000


Scholarship

One scholarship, possibly two if funds permit.
