Governor-General Reception - Admiralty House, Sydney : 21/10/10 Print

On Thursday 21st October the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and patron to Arthritis Australia, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, held our Benefactor Awards at Sydney's Admiralty House in Kirribilli.

Arthritis Australia holds the Benefactor Awards annually to recognise the support given to the organisation through donations, bequests, voluntary work and services in-kind.

This year there were a number of individuals acknowledged for their contribution to our organisation.  They are as follows:

Kilimanjaro Ascent Team

Matthew Leibowitz

Peter Collins

Jonathan Shapiro

Daniel Been

Jeremy Unger

Matthew Leibowitz, who has ankylosing spondylitis, led 19 people in an inspirational assault on Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro.  Among the group were Matthew's friends - Jonathan Shapiro, Daniel Been, Peter Collins and Jeremy Unger - his rheumatologist, Dr Jim Bertouch, and the Chair of Rheumatology at the University of Sydney, Professor Philip Sambrook.  Together they raised more than $90,000 for research into ankylosing spondylitis, proving life's obstacles, arthritis included, can be overcome with determination and teamwork.

Adam Gilchrist Trading Challenge Supporters

Adam Gilchrist AM

Craig Coleman

The Adam Gilchrist Trading Challenge was an online, simulated stock market game that traded hypothetical shares and in doing so, raised $63,000 for arthritis research.  Adam was keen to support the project because arthritis has seriously affected his father.

Craig Coleman assisted by developing the competition and worked on its marketing and implementation.

Arthritis Australia wishes to thank the Governor General for hosting this event.
